No. That's a roundtrip query, very expensive (it only takes a few roundtrips to result in a noticable delay even on 10 Mbps LAN). Unfortunately, the people who designed X assumed it was going to run with sophisticated clients over a network, while "modern" Linux distros typically optimize it to run with very naive clients on the same workstation as the server. XEmacs has a _lot_ of users who depend on reasonable behavior over a reasonable connection (eg, ADSL). If the server is running on the same workstation as the client, the right way to go is Xrender.
