Looks like an XEmacs issue to me. Reply-to set to xemacs-beta and mike.kupfer; no point in bugging ding with a thread on XEmacs problems that seem to occur before Gnus ever gets loaded. I don't think this would affect the gnus-splash-face which should be defface'd when Gnus is loaded, though. Still it may be worth chasing these down.
