Unfortunaley this was not helpful. As I am not using the colorgcc, or
if I am I cant tell and am not doing it purposefully. I am merely run
'M-x compile' and then compiling 'make -f Makefile.blah' With this I
get Ansi escape tags showing up. If this is an ?environment? problem,
then what variable do I need to set to 'TTY'????
Here is what is annoying. I have a split Xemacs window, one side shell
one side compile. The shell side has ANSI color, the compile side only
has ANSI escape stuff. and in my .emacs I have:
(add-hook 'shell-mode-hook 'ansi-color-for-comint-mode-on)
(add-hook 'compilation-mode-hook 'ansi-color-for-comint-mode-on)
yes, i am not an emacs guru and humbly accept any help
thanks

The shell probably is recognized as a TTY, while M-x compile is not.
Most likely you are using the color-gcc script; probably it has an
option or environment variable that allows you to tell it it should
colorize even when stdout is not a TTY. You can set that environment
variable before starting XEmacs, or with `setenv'.
