In addition to the reported crashes, Xemacs also exited
ungratiously when I clicked on the "News" button in the
Gtg+-toolbar.
compiled without gtk and gnome the fonts in the modeline display
correctly and sound works (it does not in the gtk-version -- but
that is true in 21.4.8 and in previous 21.5 versions).
I am now compiling with gtk and --with-sound=noesd,native
and will see how that goes.

I don't know current status of ESD development, but historically
events and ESD don't mix well. There was a huge race condition in
libesd (see PROBLEMS for details). I would appreciate a report on
whether --with-sound=noesd,native works better.
I think I'm going to disable autodetection of ESD (already disabled in
21.4).
