Problem is, I don't have the old system any longer ... but I don't
recall any special system settings I might have forgotten during the
switch, you know, sort of standard installation to get things running
fast, never mind warnings in the beginning.
Only thing I know is that xterms also showed up the locale warnings. 
Perhaps, the path to the locale directory (aliases) can't be found,
although /usr/lib/X11/locale looks straight enough.

 The one environment setting related to locale I've had problems with
 is `*inputMethod: kinput2'.  This appears to cause any
 Motif/Lesstif-using application to coredump.  Kterm, XEmacs,
 etc. deal with it O.K. of course. 
I had some of the LC_XXX variables set (LANG and CTYPE I guess) in my
profile. This bothered ...
