well, given the problems on windows, it would obviously make sense there to have
a version that speaks the ftp protocol directly.
furthermore, don't most proxies use some standard way of proxying? for example,
the little Cygwin setup program that we use for our own has a few settings for
proxies, and generally that seems to work fine.

It'd actually be much easier than talking to the ftp client. However,
that zaps 99% of all gateway support right away, which is why neither
ange-ftp nor EFS go that route.
