The same is true for XEmacs 21.5.3beta, but an early gtk-xemacs (which reports itself as XEmacs 21.1 (patch 12) "GTK" [Lucid] (i686-pc-linux) of Mon Nov 12 2001 on bundalo) does set zmacs-region and highlight.
