btw, i tried two scenarios before applying the setq hack:
* start server and load file:
xemacs -funcall gnuserv-start -iconic foo.tex &
==> ok, but had to make window visible after it disappeared
* start server, then run gnuclient
xemacs -funcall gnuserv-start &
gnuclient foo.tex &
==> crash.

using tcsh & aliases:
xe gnuclient !* &
xes xemacs -funcall gnuserv-start -iconic !* &
]
