Dear Bug Team!
When I start up XEmacs and run M-x shell, I get this line:
Forked child base mismatch: 2000000 1000000!
three times, then no prompt, and nothing happens when I type
commands. I'm using the MKS Toolkit shell (ksh).
This sounds like a problem reported previously (in
http://list-archive.xemacs.org/xemacs-nt/199910/msg00107.html), and
fixed in XEmacs 21.1.9 (http://www.xemacs.org/Releases/21.1.9.html),
and, indeed, I don't have this problem with 21.1.9. But I do with
21.4.8.

The version you are using is compiled using the portable dumper so you
shouldn't see this problem. I really have no clue as to what the problem is.
Maybe its some dll clash - but I thought windows was supposed to cope.

I don't think this has anything to do with portable dumping or DLL
conflicts. The fix that was in 21.1.9 was later backed out because it was
causing other problems. Currently it's not possible to use the MKS Toolkit
shell under the native XEmacs on Windows.

When the native Windows version of XEmacs creates a process it injects
some code into a thread in the new process to call SetConsoleCtrlHandler
in that process. As it currently stands it does this before starting the
main thread in the new process. This causes some minor change in the
memory layout of the process which apparently confuses the MKS shell. My
change was to defer this forced call to SetConsoleCtrlHandler until the
main thread had a chance to get started. This solves the problem with the
MKS shell but made it impossible to interrupt some programs.
In my workspace I have a version which makes the behavior conditional on
the setting of a Lisp variable mswindows-mks-compatible-start-process, but
I've never proposed checking that in since my general feeling is that
there must be a better way to handle this whole problem. I've discovered
that, even with the original code, it's not possible to reliably interrupt
some subprocesses. Other programs that start subprocesses are able to
interrupt them so there must be a way to do this properly. I just haven't
had time to look into it in detail. In the maintime a note in PROBLEMS
would be a good idea.

I have put MKS on my personal list of offenders when I found they had
broken RCS compatibility by changing the RCS file format in their
product called "Source Integrity".
Therefor I am not in favor of making any compromise to support MKS.

product called "Source Integrity".
Therefor I am not in favor of making any compromise to support MKS.
That's ok with me. I've switched to using the cygwin bash shell almost
all the time so it doesn't really matter to me personally. A note in
PROBLEMS is still probably a good idea. I would also still like to find a
way to make interrupts work without the run_in_other_process kluge used
now, but that will have to wait for more free time than I have now.
