Whenever XEmacs 21.4.3 is started with a following script

Does it only occur when you use the script, or does it occur if you
run the xemacs binary directly?
it tries to connect to the Internet for some reason. As my kernel is
set to auto-connect / auto-hangup, when my ISP has problems then
21.4.3 will not start at all !!
This is usually caused by the attempt to resolve the hostname to an
FQDN. I am told that, with recent Linux distributions, /etc/hosts
isn't sufficient; even if the FQDN is listed there, DNS will be used.
If I unload kernel ISDN modules, no problems. There is no output
regarding this on the console, nor anything in .xeamcs/ files that
would make it behave in that manner.
Using "xemacs -vanilla" will bypass any startup files (either per-user
or system-wide). If it still happens, it's the hostname lookup.
