let me clarify -- if you 'M-x grep' for something that's in a bunch of .el files, i find that each time i "next error" and the progress gauge pops up, when it disappears, the division between windows moves up one line. this means the geometry code in the gutters has a rounding problem -- it should be rounding a value and instead it's truncating. i was almost sure you posted something that changed the size of the partial line at the bottom to avoid rounding problems?
