Not really. It has grown old in some parts (it could do with a modern
Lisp that is fast and has a modules/package system). But apart from
that most changes to Emacs are pretty localized (like for instance
your udp support).
Are we trading
complexity for speed/space, or are people just hacking emacs to death
for fun?
I like to think we are trading space/complexity for functionality.
XEmacs (after starting up) has only become faster if anything in the
recent years.
