Not that I have the answer, but I have a very similar system: which
version of gcc is gcc? On my system the executable built with gcc 2.7.2.1
-- 2.2.7's default -- without me changing CFLAGS dumped core, but the
executable built with 2.8.1 (from the ports collection) seems to be OK...
