I did M-x package-get and installed gnus. But then on starting gnus
with M-x gnus, I got the error message
"cannot open load file: %s: sha1"
Installing the ecrypto package fixed it. Perhaps gnus should have
an
explicit dependency on ecrypto so that if you install gnus you are
prompted to install ecrypto first.
That dependency exists already. It is just that your method of
package installation didn't invoke any dependency checking[1].
To (hopefully) save you from this in the future, instead of `M-x
package-get', use `M-x pui-list-packages' (after selecting a
download site). Then after you have selected the packages you
wish to install/upgrade, hit `r' to add any required packages. Then
install.

HTH.
