The following message is a courtesy copy of an article that has been posted to comp.emacs.xemacs as well. cperl-invalid-face is the variable governing this. I can't see a clean way to turn this feature off. I shall note, however, that I find this a valuable feature. It shows trailing whitespace garbage in perl script which I wouldn't notice otherwise. I get rid of these by entering and exiting picture-mode. In keeping with the spirit of Emacs it should still be possible to turn this feature off for those who don't like it.
