I wanted to customize the font-lock modeline string, so I added a new
customizable variable to font-lock.el (for 21.5-b3) and posted my
patch (attached) to xemacs-patches.
Is the idea of customizable modeline-string variables any good? Is it
worth applying to all, or most minor modes?

I like it. Modeline real estate is at a premium, even if we do get
scrollable modelines from Didier.
The docstring needs improvement though. Note that (1) the mode
indicator string normally should begin with a space, (2), you can
disable the indicator entirely with the empty string, and (3) that
empty string should be empty, and not contain a single space.
I kinda like the name "font-lock-modeline-indicator" but not all that
strongly. "-string" has the advantage of making the type clear.

To be pedantic, note that several modes (flyspell, xslt etc) offer a
`*-mode-line-string' variable. It would be nice to conform to this and use
`font-lock-mode-line-string' as the name.

I noticed that lots of variables with "mode-line" in their names were
aliases for variables with "modeline", and kinda assumed "modeline"
was the preferred XEmacs term.

I seem to recall a discussion a long time ago about that, but I can't
honestly pretend I'm 100% sure which was the preferred term. AFAICR, the idea
was to follow GNU Emacs convention that preferred mode-line at some point.

I think doing the same thing as GNU Emacs is good. I wonder whether
"modeline" usage tries to avoid having to define :tags for defcustom
forms, at least in part:
(defcustom foo-modeline-string " Foo"
"*String to display in the modeline when Foo mode is active."
:type 'string)
(defcustom bar-mode-line-string " Bar"
"*String to display in the modeline when Foo mode is active."
:type 'string)
Foo Modeline String: * Foo
[State]: this option is unchanged from its standard setting.
String to display in the modeline when Foo mode is active.
Bar Mode Line String: * Bar
[State]: this option is unchanged from its standard setting.
String to display in the modeline when Foo mode is active.
This could be read: Bar Mode, Line String.
