Try typing M-x edit-itimers. If you see _lots_ of them, then you are suffering from the "itimer idle timer not firing" bug caused by internal itimer calculations overflowing some itimer internal calulation. There is patch for that in the archives. We are waiting to for the maintainer to release a version with the fix (:-p). itimer doens't handle tens of timers very well. Jan
