Yup, when it started. There had been a \377 in there.

Regrettably, about 10min after I posted that, with the dying xemacs
still trapped in gdb hell, the machine crashed. :-(
I will see what I can learn when it next happens. Perhaps I can
induce this one more easily, if it just takes a high-bit char.
Could you check buf->pt and buf->bufpt in this frame? (As well
as the
value of bufmin).

Which gcc version do you use?
2.7.2.3, as distributed with RH5.2, bland and vanilla.
