GNU Emacs supports a fifth argument to load, MUST-SUFFIX, described as
If optional fifth arg MUST-SUFFIX is non-nil, insist on
the suffix `.elc' or `.el'; don't accept just FILE unless
it ends in one of those suffixes or includes a directory name.
What is this good for (besides breaking the Oort-Gnus build)?

It might be good for breaking EFS (efs-load) and DSO loading as
well.:-)
MUST-SUFFIX might be useful in an interactive situation, but isn't
that what load-(file|library|module) is for?
Our `load' is sufficiently divergent from GNU because of DSO's to say
"5th arg to load? Pfft, who needs it."

Yeah, well, it's not interactive on GNU Emacs, either.

Unfortunately, that will mean that either we or the package
maintainers who use that argument will have to maintain
XEmacs-specific code there. I think maybe the thing to do is put a
place-holder arg there so we don't do something with it that will
result in people writing code that breaks when moved to GNU Emacs.
I keep trying to believe there's something more than "let's make work
for XEmacs" to these innovations, but stuff like this makes it hard.

hard time thinking of a use for it.
