What version of XEmacs are you using? Printing now works out of the box
with XEmacs. The fact that it is looking for lpr indicates that you have
some sort of configuration issue. Did you try File->Print from the menubar?

Hi. I was told to e-mail this message to you. I also include a previous
e-mail that I sent to Gunnar at the bottom of this message. srk

Having just installed another printer on my W2K system, I'll add one more
piece of information. In the Add Printer setting, I specify that I'm
adding a local printer, without plug-and-play. Then I create a new
port. In the process, I specify the IP address of the printer.

Hi. I have posted to comp.xemacs, but I'm not getting any help. My
problem seems serious enough: inability to print postscript output to an
HP printer (4100TN).
I have appended my original message to the group, and some of my
clarifications. I have also appended the logs that were created in the
installation.
It seems to me that printing is core functionality for a program. I hope
you can help me.

printing on Windows 2000 on networked printer

I've searched for answers, but none on this list so far seems to fix the
problem. If I File/Print a text file, it prints with a date and
filename header (on the top left and top right, respectively) and a page
footer, as vanilla text (Courier-like font).
When I hit the Print button, it says
"Searching for program: No such file or directory,"
(The comma is the program's.) After I inserted
(setq ps-lpr-command "lpr")
into the custom.el file, if I type ps-print-buffer, there is feedback
that it's been printed, but no printing occurs. When I remove the (setq
ps-lpr-command "lpr") command and I type ps-print-buffer, I'm told
"Searching for program: No such file or directory,"
I'd really appreciate it if someone can help me fix this. (It took me a
day or two last time for me to get GNU emacs to print postscript output
under Windows 95 (pretty print, I think), and now that I'm on Win 2000,
I've already spent hours, and gotten (almost) nowhere.)

I've checked my printing setup for my default printer (which works for
Word & Excel). The default printer definition connects to the network
printer port using the IP address of the printer. srk

What version of Emacs or XEmacs are you using? From the above, it sounds
like you are using GNU Emacs, but then why did you post to
comp.emacs.xemacs?
If you are indeed using GNU Emacs, there's a section in the manual about
setting up printing on DOS and Windows systems.

I'm sorry I was unclear. I used to use GNU Emacs, but now I'm using XEmacs,
version 21.4. The only manual I've seen seems to be several years old.
I've just checked the XEmacs manual that I found at
www.xemacs.org; it turns
out that I looked at it yesterday (and also the gnu website for ntemacs) in
search of a fix.
BTW, I realize that devotees of emacs tend also to scoff at Windows OS's. I
much prefer Unix myself. But that isn't a choice for me at work. What I can
do is promise that if this printing problem is resolved, I will be able to
help others at work resolve it.
