This is a poor decision, if we want to encourage contributions to XEmacs. We MUST provide .gz files. Ideally we would also provide .bz2 files, as the Linux Kernel project does. My own scripts for grabbing the latest beta release were broken by the switch to .bz2. I'm sure others have had the same experience.
