Because you did the set-face-font too late.
If you had the following line in your X resources, your other fonts
will get set up just fine.
Emacs.default.attributeFont: Arial:Regular:10
And if I'm running on mswindows? ;) I thought the font spec might give it
away.
Seriously, this has to be a bug. set-face-font in .emacs is a valid (only
way on mswindows) way of setting the default font and should be honoured
properly.
