It isn't impossible because you built the same version from the
sources of the version you already had. Try changing some of the
internals and building a new version. This is nearly impossible, and
just barely possible if you're a CMUCL wizard.
If you succeed in this, try porting CMUCL to a new architecture.

40 minutes sounds about right to rebuild CMUCL. On my Gateway PII-300
at work, it takes 10-15 minutes.
