yesterday i tried to build the latest & greatest xemacs straight from
cvs, on my home system, i.e., debian unstable
if i tried to configure --with-athena=3d, the configuration stopped,
with the message (more or less) "i found no suitable athena library"
i had to configure without specifying anything with regard to athena,
i built xemacs, installed and, surprise, i had a working xemacs with
xft and 3d widgets...
it's me that i've done something bad, it's configure or it'debian?

do you have xaw3d and xaw3d-devel packages installed? I don't have
this problem (but I haven't built on my Debian system in several
weeks).

Some widgets (the scrollbars, toolbars, separators, modeline, and
menubar) are provided by the Lucid library or XEmacs itself, and they
will be 3d. The tab control widget and progress bar are adapted from
Ed Falk's library, and may provided their own 3d aspects, too.
It's also possible that Athena now does 3d (they've bumped the major
version a couple of times in the last couple of years).

it seems that i have installed three different athena libraries, and
one set of development files, all sporting the same version
number... and one xaw3d library with the relevant headers, and i built
xemacs several times linking to the xaw3dg library
well, i have a working emacs and i'm happy, but i'm still confused...

i'm more confused, i tried again the building process, starting with
$ configure --with-xft=emacs,menubars,tabs --with-xface \
--with-sound=none --with-mule --with-athena=3d
a configure command line that yesterday failed, and this time
configure did its job, i built xemacs and i have now finished the make
check. all right. boh!
what commands could i spell to know what libraries an executable is
linked to?
