Which is (one reason) why it's useful to keep the discussion on-list. ;-) I'm guessing this has something to do with setting the selection or clipboard larger than X can handle, but that's just a guess. You could try setting interprogram-cut-function to nil M-: (setq interprogram-cut-function nil) and see if that helps. Or maybe someone else on xemacs-beta (cc'd) has a better idea.
