Has anybody done any benchmarking to determine why this is so? My first
instinctive guess is that the fact that objects are twice as big means
that only half as many can fit into the processor's L1/L2 caches.
Are *most* programs affected by a slowdown if recompiled in 64-bit mode,
or does it seem to be XEmacs-specific? If the latter, it should be (at
least theoretically) possible to track down and shoot the culprit...
