Hi,
Today my XEmacs died on me without any particular reason?
Then I wanted to send a crash report but The `Send Bug Report' item on
the help menu is greyed out:-( Then I tried a M-x send-pr and got:
send-pr: the GNATS site xemacs.org does not have a categories list.
So I'll try the `hand-written' method now:-(

I was in the process of opening a (noexisting) C++ file to create a
little verification case for a bug and I got the following backtraces.
(The Lisp part is a little bit hand edited because I was running some
other Terminal app in the window where I originally started XEmacs.)

If necessary/possible, please install the latest net-utils package (>=
1.23) and then use
Help->Send Bug Report...
or
M-x report-emacs-bug
as suggested in
http://www.xemacs.org/Debug/index.html

The C trace is deep in Motif, and the Lisp trace seems to be updating
a progress bar. Is that the case? I think the conclusion was that
the Motif progress bar is buggy, and the workaround is to turn it
off.:-(

Could be, I've font-lock turned on and the progress bar shows even on
new/empty C/C++ source files.

Ok, I customize progress-feedback-use-echo-area to t;-) I didn't
really like the large progress gauges anyhow so there is no loss for
me;-)

Consider yourself lucky (perhaps you're running Solaris and happen
to have the magic patches already installed)? Numerous people have
reported this problem, under both Solaris and HP-UX (unfortunately, only
Sun appears to have a patch for this).

How do I find out what patches have been installed? I know my machine
(Solaris 2.7) has had quite a few patches installed to support various
other bits of commercial software.
I've had the progress bar running since Andy add it. If it's a common
cause of crashing son Solaris, I don't really recall it happening to
me (knock on wood). There have been other problems, but crashing
wasn't one of them.

Sorry, don't know. The Solaris2 FAQ doesn't help (it's out of
date/incorrect, even though it's dated Jan 2002), and accessing Sun's
site requires a valid support contract or something.

I asked our support person. (Which I should have done from the
beginning instead of asking you. Sorry.) It's showrev -p.
I have 107656-07 installed but only 107081-36 instead of -40.
I don't know when these were installed.
I guess these are ok for me, or that I'm lucky, or that I don't hit
the progress bar often enough or in the way to make it crash.

$ /bin/showrev -p (or /bin/showrev -a)
should give you the information you're looking for;-)
On my fairly uptodate S8 I've currently 417 patches installed;-)

Since Sun has a Motif patch that supposedly fixes the crash-at-exit
(seemingly) caused by the progress bar, Marco should try installing that
patch, if he hasn't already. From PROBLEMS (the "problem" below refers
to the crash-at-exit, and not the crash-in-redisplay):
Installing the following patches has been reported to solve the
problem on Solaris 2.7:
107081-40 107656-07
For information (although they have not been confirmed to work),
the equivalent patches for Solaris 2.8 are:
108940-33 108652-25
