I just updated my Ubunut 12 system to Ubuntu 14 and xemacs is now
crashing consistently. I tried updating xemacs to the latest code and
the crash is still happening.
Here is the recipe, running src/xemacs -vanilla. In the *scratch*

From #3, I can see that p is 0, which means FcNameParse returned 0.
I don't know what this all means, but I can help debug this with some
guidance.
Because this crashes, my selected fonts are all kind of messed up now.

into gdb and use the user command "pp" on it, it should tell you what

Thanks for the information. So fontconfig at least is consistent
here. I'll look at the implementation of fc-pattern to see if it does
any extra preparation for those strings or is branching on zero to
some fallback. (I doubt it, but if so it might be an easy fix.)

I put a breakpoint at xft_find_charset_font and I can see that xemacs
successfully parses things like "DejaVu Sans Mono-12:weight=200", the
value of patternext. There are several calls on startup for various
fonts and they all succeed of course.

Don't know how xemacs decided to get this huge patternext, but maybe
that charset stuff is confusing FcNameParse? In fact, fc-pattern with
the string above fails saying it's "Unable to parse the pattern". And
sure enough, if I delete everything from charset=<junk> to :lang,

Ah, I recognize this bug! It has already been fixed in mercurial, by
Stephen, over a year ago, but we haven't made a release since then.

defun fc-name-parse-harder. I don't understand the crash, as there is
also code in src/font-mgr.c:Ffc_name_parse to detect NULL returns and
signal. I wonder if your XEmacs is somehow out of date? I believe
these changes were installed 2013-09-15 or soon after (ChangeLog date
is 2013-09-10).
I guess I was only running into this in my own code and in one place
in font.el (where I changed fc-name-parse to fc-name-parse-harder).
So I hesitated to put the parse-harder code into the advertised
fc-name-parse function, because you end up with something that doesn't
roundtrip. I like to preserve invariants.

Yes, I saw Jerry's comments about fc-name-parse-harder.
The latest tests were done with a recent mercurial version, but I did
an hg pull -u yesterday and rebuilt, just to be sure.
I'll poke around a bit more.

FYI, I built xemacs from current hg sources on a Macbook Pro running
10.9.5. This crash happens there now too.
My old MacbookPro laptop was also running 10.9.5, but the version of
xemacs I have running there was built quite some time ago, and it
doesn't have this problem. From this I conclude that something in
xemacs has changed to cause the issue. Maybe.
I won't be able to keep my old laptop around much longer, but I'll try
to see what's different between the versions.

Hm. Now I'm seeing this too. Of course the version of XEmacs has
changed, but so have the versions of Xcode and of the MacPorts clang
(my usual compiler because I preferred the error messages to GCC's),
and I may have changed my options for GC to --newgc. XEmacs is
sluggish and GC takes a long time. I'm going to rebuild without
--newgc, and also try with GCC.
If you haven't sent your Installations for the two XEmacsen yet,
please do.

I discovered by switching debuggers to lldb from gdb that the crash
was occurring in PRINT_XFT_PATTERN. I still don't understand why (gdb
is useless, and I haven't figured out lldb well enough to decode Lisp
objects), so I protected all instances of FcNameUnparse. I think this
is reasonable since the printed representation of an FcCharset is not
really useful to Emacs Lisp programmers.

I don't understand this; modern XEmacs .gdbinit uses pobj, my mistake.
Why there is a "pp" user command available I don't know.
