 I don't know how to get XEmacs to link against the old libs
(they're still
 there since display for one seems to want them), so I don't know how to
 test what the problem is. 
It's a bug fixed in a more recent version of the library.  Perhaps we should
strengthen our PNG version detection, and plead again with Neal Becker to
release an updated libgr?
