Try --with-sysmalloc or whatever the option is. Also play with
--pdump. Changes to malloc in pre-2.3 and later glibc hosed Linux
generally, nobody really knows why. There's a workaround for 32-bit
Linuces but there have been a number of problems reported with
64-bit boxen.
That helps. Maybe it should be enabled by default on Alpha? Or are
there any disadvantages?
