Thanks - I realized, too, that we had RHEL5, so I downloaded all the
corresponding Xemacs packages
xemacs-21.5.29-12.el5.1.x86_64.rpm
xemacs-common-21.5.29-12.el5.1.x86_64.rpm
xemacs-devel-21.5.29-12.el5.1.x86_64.rpm
xemacs-el-21.5.29-12.el5.1.x86_64.rpm
xemacs-info-21.5.29-12.el5.1.x86_64.rpm
xemacs-nox-21.5.29-12.el5.1.x86_64.rpm
xemacs-packages-base-20090217-4.el5.noarch.rpm
xemacs-packages-base-el-20090217-4.el5.noarch.rpm
xemacs-packages-extra-info-20090217-7.el5.noarch.rpm
xemacs-packages-extra-20090217-7.el5.noarch.rpm
xemacs-packages-extra-el-20090217-7.el5.noarch.rpm
And installed them all. Got a couple of warnings
rpm -Uvh /tools/local/download/rpm/xemacs-*.rpm****

Then I moved default.el.rpmnew and site-start.el.rpmnew to default.el and
site-start.el respectively.
Now, xemacs works, however, the all important script that I want - need - to
run, namely "hide-lines.el" (
http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/hide-lines.el)
does not run as expected.
C-c h (and M-x hide-lines) throws up
Syntax error: Invalid 'interactive' control letter "M" (#o115)
Totally unsure what that means.
My previous installation of xemacs said it couldn't find function
"add-to-invisibility-spec". So there's some progress, I think.
Meanwhile, this particular script (hide-lines) runs well on standard emacs.
Is there a difference between emacs and xemacs scripts? Is there an
alternative script for xemacs? I realize this is beyond xemacs installation
specifically, but hoping you can help anyway.
Any help sincerely appreciated.
Thanks

That "el5" indicates a RHEL 5 kernel. You're either running RHEL 5,
not RHEL 4, or you have installed a RHEL 5 kernel on your RHEL 4
machine.
You are correct that there is no prebuilt XEmacs binary for RHEL4. If
you really are running RHEL 4, you'll have to build your own.
