No, it doesn't work. There's no alternative at the moment AFAIK,
although Aidan might have something. (Give him a couple of days, and
if he doesn't respond, maybe you could ping him directly.)
It's never been pressing for me personally because the GUI's input
method works fine for me, and usually search-forward or
re-search-forward is just as efficient (Japanese input by character is
very inefficient, it's much more efficient by word). If Aidan doesn't
have something, maybe I'll take a look at it in a couple of weeks (I
need to work on moving our web services off of the current host first,
though).
