Michael, why are you making this so hard? *if* you're running in place, and *if* you
can't find the packages, and *if* there's a valid tree parallel to the root, then
use
it. In your case, if the tree found is not a valid package hierarchy, then it should be
ignored.

What Ben wants is to have the package hierarchies *outside* the source
tree like this:
xemacs-21.2/ (source tree)
xemacs-packages/ (package hierarchy)
The problem is that the CVS module is *also* called xemacs-packages,
but a checked-out package tree is not a package hierarchy. So if you
have this layout:
xemacs-21.2/ (source tree)
xemacs-packages/ (package tree from CVS)
(as I do) things won't work right: you then need an xemacs-packages
directory with a real package hierarchy underneath xemacs-21.2.
Note that all this is *only* for running in-place.

In order to save my hands, I am cutting back on my mail. I also write
as succinctly as possible -- please don't be offended. If you send me
mail, you _will_ get a response, but please be patient, especially for
XEmacs-related mail. If you need an immediate response and it is not
apparent in your message, please say so. Thanks for your understanding.
