This is the way text selection works in Motif textfields, and the way
text selection works in all directions in the pen-based devices (all
by Sharp, so it's really not a diverse sample) I've used. This seems
relatively natural to me.

Agreed, but I wonder what would happen if you reversed the polarity of
the modeline so that it appeared to be a depressed division in the
text area rather than a raised one. I guess this would look too weird
with a horizontal scrollbar, though.
