An lstream is basically like a Unix filter or a C++ stream. Currently
it must be done at the C level. Lstreams were basically invented for
Mule, as I understand it.
lstreams are not available in GNU Emacs, and given their copyright
status (Ben Wing), they probably never will be.

Not yet, it will be in 21.5 in a couple weeks if I understand
correctly. You might take a look at cvs update -r ben-mule-21-5.
Ben Wing is the man to talk to. He returns from vacation today, I
believe. It will probably be the end of the week before he's out from
under accumulated mail and stuff.
