Should we do what Robert did? If that will make our old RMAIL users
happy, why not?

I just upgraded to Xemacs 20.2 from 19.4 (I think) ... and RMAIL
has changed drastically. I want the old behavior back - where do
I find information on all the new "functionality" and how to
disable it?
I haven't found a better solution than to use an rmail.el from an old
XEmacs (in my case, 19.16) instead of the horribly broken one that comes
with 20.4.
In the long run, we all have to "upgrade" to a supported mail-reader, I
guess. (But don't think I haven't tried...)
