Lisp shadows (ie, multiple copies of the same library) should not
cause XEmacs or make to crash. They should only exist if you have a
previous installation of XEmacs. They are rarely harmful, but when
they are it is very hard to debug.
I don't think that "code 138" is from XEmacs; when XEmacs crashes, it
prints tons of information all over the screen (and in particular
directs you to send mail to <crashes(a)xemacs.org>, which is an alias
for <xemacs-beta(a)xemacs.org>). AFAIK, XEmacs does not produce useful
return codes.
If you are not using GNU Make, please try installing and using it.
Also (faint hope here) try
.../configure --with-dialogs=no --with-widgets=no --pdump
If that gives you a working XEmacs and you have the packages installed
(see README.packages, maybe it's in the ./etc directory), try sending
a preformatted bug report with M-x report-emacs-bug RET.
We need to see the contents of the Installation file produced by
configure. It is included in the report generated by
report-emacs-bug, but if that doesn't work. please send it by mail as
an attached file, to <xemacs-beta(a)xemacs.org>.
Good luck!

(Psst. It's a build failure; they go to xemacs-beta. :-)
CC'ing xemacs-beta.
