My apologies, I make it a rule to try anything that involves simply
invoking C-x C-e on a form in a buffer, but apparently I didn't this

I do too. Crap. This is going to take some effort to fix. What I
did to fix Martin's bug was to make sure (I thought) that unmatched
registers got cleared on exit, but apparently they don't on failure in
string-match. The unbeatable thing to do would be to just clear them
on entry, and treat errors as a failed match clearing all the match
data registers, but I'm not sure that's the right thing to do.
This is going to take a while to fix, unless somebody else finds time
to do it. I don't have it in the near future.
