Dear Bug Team! When I put the cursor at the end of this lisp code and run M-x eval-last-sexp, it says, "b". (progn (string-match "\\(a\\)" "a") (string-match "\\(a\\)" "b") (match-string 1 "b")) The info documentation for match-string says, "This function returns, as a string, the text matched in the last search or match operation. ...if that subexpression didn't match anything, the value is `nil'" The quote says it looks at the *last* operation. The last operation in the above lisp code is the last call to string-match. That particular call didn't match anything. The quote above says that in that case, the value is nil. Therefore I think that match-string should return nil, and since progn returns whatever the last expression returns, then I think the overall return value of the entire lisp code above should be nil.
