Today I tried something different. I started up a bash shell in an rxvt window
and ran xemacs manually. This gave me a similar error dialog, but it referred
to a missing "jpeg" library. So I updated my Cygwin install to install the
"jpeg" library and retested. This time it complained about a missing
"tiff"
library. I also tried rerunning from the icon, and it still gave the old error
about the missing "noX4" dll. I then reupdated Cygwin to install the
"tiff"
library. When I executed from the icon, there was no change, still the "noX4"
error. However, when I ran xemacs from the bash shell, it started up perfectly
fine and displayed no other symptoms.
I can't verify whether "c:/cygwin/bin" is in my path until tomorrow
morning,
but based on what I'm reporting here, I guess that seems like a likely
possibility. I'll report back tomorrow evening (or earlier if they finally get
my work email completely working).
