Yeah, this is a known problem. 21.5 is many months from (gamma)
release, so it's dragging out.

Easier said than done. That code is one hell of a mess; it's designed
around making Gnu Emacs (which has no specifiers) happy, there are a
couple of minor technical features that specifiers don't implement, so
what basically happens is that a huge amount of functionality is
reimplemented with slightly different semantics. Is it any wonder
it's almost always broken?
In Mule it's so bad that I just don't use Customize for faces.
Anyway, this is a small (in the great scheme of things in a beta
series) problem that IMO should be fixed with big changes.
The _first_ big change should be a BTS. Let's see what we can do....
