Hello,
I can't compile XEmacs 21.4 on Mac OS X with external widget support because
the syntax for making shared libraries is not the same as on other platforms.
I don't know about XEmacs 21.5; I can't use it so I don't have it handy.
With the very few minutes that I had this weekend, I spotted that the culprit
is the -shared option which doesn't exist on Darwin gcc; it has a -dynamiclib
option or something, but just using that instead wasn't enough to fix the
problem. I don't have time to look into it further.
Could someone already knowledgeable in Mac OS X system have a look at it
please ?

I don't see the problem. I've been building the external widget for
years, although I haven't tested it recently. I just don't use shared
libraries. Why do you need a shared library?
I don't have a clue how to make them, and have neither time nor need
to worry about it at the moment, but presumably the needed wisdom is
encapsulated in the modules code (ellcc).

libextcli_Xt.so.1 and libextcli_Xlib.so.1 are shared libraries.

libextcli_Xt.so.1 and libextcli_Xlib.so.1 are shared libraries.
Mach-O shared libraries don't behave exactly the same way that ELF
shared libraries do, so they are not quite the same thing. Take a look at:

*need* shared libraries, or would inhibiting them so that you can
finish the build be good enough?
Doing this right on Mac OS X would involve at least fixing the
extension (.so -> .dylib). (IIRC that's not strictly necessary but
there'd be no point in flouting convention.)
This test in src/Makefile.in.in looks bogus to me:

However, I don't know what the right way to handle that test is, so
prepending three lines:

# undef EXTW_LINK

should allow you to build only the static libraries. (untested)
On 21.5 building actually "works" because Ben moved the stanza that
defines shared_other_files to where EXTW_LINK isn't defined yet, and
as a consequence the shared libraries are *never* built in 21.5. I'm
not sure why he did that, probably just an accident of reorganizing
the Makefile.

Actually, I think the external widget is way cool (even if KParts and
the like have gone way beyond it using 100MB of supporting libraries
;-), so I'd like to see it actually in use. If there's a real use
that requires shared libraries, I might actually have to do something
about it. :-)

I have a neat application for it under dev. but I'm not ready to talk
about it right now ;-) But it doesn't especially require shared libs anyway...
