XEmacs crashed when I was getting new email.
No lisp backtrace. Stacktrace is attached below.

i get the feeling that there's some more missing gcpros around. time for a gcproing
hunt. i think you might have pretty
good luck checking the functions that appear in the backtrace. there are a lot of calls
to expand-file-name, and people
forget that it can gc.

OK, well i went ahead and checked all the suspect functions in your backtrace and
carefully fixed up all the gcpro's. there
were at least 2 or 3 places where there were definite danger spots. some are very
non-obvious -- e.g. a construction like f
= one-file-operation (another-file-operation), where both return newly allocated stuff and
both, esp. one-file-operation,
can gc.
they'll be in my next [big] patch.
