Sounds weird to me. Are these (K)ubuntu versions of XEmacs or
self-compiled? Do you get a different result if you do xemacs
-vanilla or xemacs -vanilla -no-start-file?
FWIW. On Solaris x86/x64 with 21.4.22, I have to set this variable by
hand in site-start.el
