dired, last time i checked, was different to say the least)
e.g., open tar
C-x C-f curl-7.23.1.tar.gz RET
decompresses and opens, dired-like, the tar file curl-7.23.1.tar.gz
and the same happens in dired when you open curl-7.23.1.tar.gz
e.g., create tar
in dired, mark the files and the directories ("m") that you want to
archive, then ask dired to execute a shell command ("!")
dired does (almost) the right thing, you have just to add the tar
filename to the default "tar cvf" that you're offered
