I don't want to get in the middle of this, but there are two
interesting
points here from my perspective. 1. I have not been able to build an
Xft xemacs-beta under Solaris 9 yet. Maybe, I should put my butt in
gear and submit a problem
Yes, please. I don't think I have access to a Solaris 9 system, but
maybe I can get it. And definitely there are folks around who do.
or a patch, huh? 2. I thought the flicker under X11.app was just
something that only I was suffering with. I'm using Carbon XEmacs,
is that an Xft build?
The Carbon console of Carbon XEmacs uses the native drawing
capabilities of Mac OS X (the Quartz rendering engine). So X should
not be involved at all. You could try unsetting DISPLAY before
running XEmacs; I don't know whether the Carbon console is in addition
to the X console, or if it displaces it. If "in addition", maybe
you're getting the X console, which would be a shame.
Currently, the patch appears to be offline and I can't seem to
find
it right now. In any case, if we can get rid of this flicker
I don't know what you mean by "flicker". If you run over a slow link,
you will discover that XEmacs often redisplays the same area *many*
times for no external reason. I think that one problem is that the
widget code does a lot of unnecessary unmapping and remapping of
windows, and sets a lot of "dirty flags"; you could try building
--without-widgets to see if matters improve.
I'm guessing that you guys don't support Carbon XEmacs
anyways.
Nope. We do not support GPL violations. Our lawyer tells me that
Choi's public domain dedication is valid regardless of his GPL
violations, so when I have time I'll pull some version of his patch
into CVS again and get to work on it. However, we cannot take any
responsibility for Choi's distribution.
