A mostly offline discussion with Werner Fink of SuSE encourages me (although his approach was quite different), but I'm still not happy about applying it to stable, since geometry management routines still call each other recursively (in what I think are "safe" cases, no famous last words this time, please!), and that's an Xt no-no. Testers: please look for oddities in the borders. Dr. Fink observes that truncation of the minibuffer line is a side effect of his patch, so that's something to look for.
