I've had every version of Fedora ever released on one i386 machine of mine or another, and I've never encountered this problem, which suggests some kind of configuration problem. Let's verify that XEmacs thinks that line and column modes are activated. In the *scratch* buffer, can you please evaluate line-number-mode (press Ctrl-j to evaluate) and tell us what the response is?
