Hi All, ME TOO!
I see this in native Windows XEmacs 21.1.14, 21.4.4, 21.5-b2!
This happens to me sometimes when I start gnus via the toolbar (which
opens a new frame, see the connection?).
Sometimes RET is not taken to end password entry, sometimes none of
the chracters I type (to enter the password) even produce a dummy-dot.
I can start gnus via
M-x gnus
and enter my password after I close the old frame.
My initial thought was that some keymap magic was getting broken when
invoking gnus via toolbar-news, which calls toolbar-gnus.
