Yep; that comes under "cut" (or "kill", in Emacs terminology).
Most of XEmacs' "deletion" operations (e.g. C-w, C-k) save the deleted
text on the kill-ring (similar to a clipboard, but it keeps a history
of previous values, not just the last value).

i'm working with an engineer at sun microsystems on this he is seeing this.
"I did play with this a bit and found that acroread is doing something
with the GDK_SELECTION property and xemacs is also looking at this
property. I used truss -ulibX11: -p <pid> to see what X11 calls are
being made and saw both acroread and xemacs busy doing something. Then,
using the man pages for XGetWindowProperty() the third argument is the
property atom. xlsatoms lists this as GDK_SELECTION."
i've trussed the process myself and can provide them and cores when
xemacs crashes if this would be helpful.
i've also built xemacs 21.4.19 without Motif and with GCC and i'm unable
to recreate this issue. i'm going to build with suns compiler to see
what happens. though now when i compile in MULE support without motif
the gui crashes but that's another issue.

Not in the build report, true, but he commented that he also tried a
MULE build, and that's what Vin was responding to.
To clarify the issue, for several years --with-xim=xlib caused crashes
on several platforms, so on Motif-ly platforms (SunOS, Solaris, maybe
HP/UX?) --with-xim=motif was forced. This generally didn't matter at
that time because people almost always wanted Motif on those platforms
for consistent look and feel, but it was a latent bug.
As Athena improved and other toolkits became more usable, they _were_
used, and this behavior of configure caused --with-mule to pull in XIM
if available, on those platforms it defaults to --with-xim=motif,
which pulled in all of the basic Motif stuff as well as any other
toolkit that was specified, with the predictable results of hilarity
and confusion. A good time was had by all! Or something like that.
I'm sorry about this; I've been aware of it for a couple years, and
have made desultory efforts at improvement. But every time we
refactor the Athena detection, this stuff gets confused, and we've
never managed to get it to where it reliably produces sane results.

Are you sure you are using Motif? I can confirm that it does not work
with Lesstif, at least not the version of Lesstif that comes on the
Companion CD. I bet what is coming next is someone who says that it does
work with Lesstif :o)

Good point. Definitely make sure that you have all of your Motif patches.
However, there is still one bug that I could never find a patch for which I
assume is Motif or CDE related:

when i was building with "--with-widgets=athena --with-dialogs=athena
--with-mule" XEmacs would crash everytime unless i specified
"--without-xim", specifying "--with-xim=xlib" with the above options
also crashed.
i was trying to get it built without motif.
