In the meantime, I managed to lose the test case I had in the above mail, they're online again now at http://koti.welho.com/vskytta/xemacs/new-vc/ I've also reverted to compiling with gcc 3.2.x due to a bunch of issues with gcc 4.1, and can currently not reproduce the *crash*, but the random error messages are still there, and everything is still fixed by removing vc/auto-autoloads.elc (only the bytecompiled one).
